In the first clinical trial involving the use of Viagra Connect and its generic equivalent, sildenafil, a generic version of Viagra, the result showed a marked increase in sexual satisfaction.
The trial was part of a larger study which was designed to see if sildenafil’s effects on men’s sexual satisfaction are comparable to those seen with other PDE5 inhibitors.
Viagra Connect, which is available in 100mg tablets for erectile dysfunction (ED) sufferers, was developed by Pfizer as a treatment for ED, but the original development was abandoned after the patent expired.
Viagra is already approved by the European Union for the treatment of ED.
In the trial, participants were randomly given one of four sildenafil-containing treatments – the placebo, sildenafil, sildenafil or tadalafil – with a maximum of four weeks to see how the participants’ sexual satisfaction impacted their treatment.
The trial was designed to see if the effect of Viagra Connect on men’s sexual satisfaction could be different to that seen with sildenafil. Sildenafil, the active ingredient of Viagra Connect, has previously been used as a treatment for ED and has had only mild to moderate effects.
“We found that the placebo group was much more satisfied with their sexual performance than the tadalafil group. In this sense, the placebo group was more successful in sexual satisfaction than the tadalafil group,” said Dr Lorn Stoltenbo, a urology expert who is also the study’s lead investigator. “The main reason for this difference in results is the placebo effect in men with ED.”
“We think this is the first clinical trial to show that the effects of sildenafil on sexual satisfaction are not markedly different from those seen with other PDE5 inhibitors.”
The trial was conducted over four weeks and lasted between four to eight weeks.
The trial is funded by Pfizer and conducted at the University of Manchester in the UK.
Dr Lorn Stoltenbo said: “I can’t think of many studies that have been done in the Netherlands and very little is known about Viagra Connect, particularly for those who have been on it for a while.”
